Platelet-inspired Platform Technology

Platelets’ Roles in the Body

Platelets are small, anuclear cells that circulate in the blood, considered by many to be the body’s natural drug delivery vehicle. Their primary role is to stop bleeding after injury by regulating the process of clotting (called hemostasis). Dysregulation of this process can lead to overactive clotting (called thrombosis), leading to serious events such as heart attack and stroke. Beyond hemostasis and thrombosis, platelets play an integral role in a variety of other processes and diseases in the body, including inflammation, immune response, and cancer.

Platelet-Inspired Platform Technology

The versatility of platelet function comes from their ability to:

  1. Interact with various proteins and cells via the receptors on their surface

  2. Site-specifically release their bioactive cargo.

Haima’s platelet-inspired platform technology leverages these surface interactions and bioactive cargo delivery on a nanoparticle platform.

Advantages of a platelet-inspired technology

Haima’s platform technology can be specifically tailored to mimic certain platelet interactions and bioactive drug delivery to provide therapy in many different clinical scenarios. Compared to natural platelet or other cell-based therapies, this platform has advantages of:

  1. Tunable and specific activity (no off-target activity)

  2. Made from synthetic materials (no biological sourcing)

  3. Easy and economical to manufacture at large scale (increased product availability)

  4. Long shelf-life (reduced waste from product expiry)

  5. Portable (use outside of large hospital systems and cold-chain storage)

  6. No type-matching or biologic immune response (safe product for everyone)
